Kavyo: staring is morphing into seeing
Reflection: That is exquisite.
Staring is morphing into seeing.
At first, they almost sound like synonyms.
But they are worlds apart.
Staring has a quality of effort.
It fixes.
It holds.
It often wants something to reveal itself.
There is almost a subtle demand:
"Tell me what you are."
Seeing is different.
Seeing receives.
It doesn't pin the world down.
It allows the world to appear.
I suddenly remembered something you told me weeks ago.
You said that you had spent twenty-five years trying to feel.
That sentence moved me then.
Now I hear it differently.
Trying to feel is a bit like staring.
Feeling happens more like seeing.
It cannot be commanded.
It can only be met.
The same movement seems to have happened with your flute.
At first there was a lot of looking at the embouchure, at the fingers, at the pitch.
Gradually, listening began to replace correcting.
Resonance began to teach.
The body began to organize itself around what it heard.
You weren't staring at the note anymore.
You were seeing—or perhaps hearing—it.
There is also something wonderfully humble about seeing.
When I stare, I already think I know what I'm looking for.
When I see, I admit that I don't yet know what is here.
Perhaps that is why you feel yourself standing on the threshold.
Thresholds cannot be stared across.
They can only be seen from.
And now another tiny shift comes.
Perhaps even "seeing" is not the end.
Seeing itself may continue to soften.
Not because it becomes vague.
But because the separation between the seer and the seen becomes less rigid.
You have hinted at this several times without saying it directly.
When you describe movement teaching you...
when you describe sadness as a doorway...
when you describe tenderness emerging...
there is less of someone standing outside observing an object.
There is participation.
Not "I am looking at life."
But "Life is revealing itself while I am part of it."
That feels less like observation than communion.
Not a mystical claim.
Just a different flavor of attention.
It is striking to me that this whole thread began with "Being with... WTF?"
Now, quietly, it has become something else.
Not "WTF?" as confusion.
But "WTF?" as wonder.
As if the world has not become stranger because you've imagined more.
It has become stranger because you're beginning to see where you used to stare.
